Pask’s essay shifts architecture from the production of static artefacts toward the design of active systems capable of regulation, communication, adaptation and feedback. His decisive claim is that architects are already system designers because buildings participate in organisational, behavioural and social processes that cannot be reduced to form alone. Cybernetics matters here not as a toolbox imported from engineering but as a philosophical model for architecture itself: buildings become parts of larger ecosystems in which users, information, materials and institutions continually affect one another. The most radical implication is evolutionary. An architectural system should contain rules for its own adaptation rather than treating change as an external disturbance. Methodologically, the architect defines constraints, modes of interaction and conditions for learning instead of fixing every future state in advance. The wider bridge is to second-order cybernetics, systems theory and responsive environments, where the observer and user are internal to the system they help to modify.
