Medici re-reads 1970s autonomous houses through Pask’s cybernetic framework and argues that technical self-sufficiency is insufficient when adaptation, user behaviour and social cooperation are excluded. The historical houses concentrated on energy, food, cost and technology, but largely failed to incorporate long-term development, maintenance, post-use and the changing practices of inhabitants. The article therefore distinguishes autonomy from isolation: a sustainable architectural system must include feedback, evolutionary principles and socio-anthropological interaction. Its methodological contribution is diagnostic. Cybernetics becomes a lens for testing whether an architectural system can learn, adapt and remain responsive across time rather than merely perform efficiently at installation. The wider bridge is to contemporary sustainability and circular design, where environmental performance depends not only on technical optimisation but on the capacity of systems to evolve with users, resources and contexts.
